Alka!!

Alka belongs to Bhil tribe of Rajasthan.she stays in a small village with her parents and 6 other siblings.
As we know tribes are not educated and not much exposed to outer world, technoloo.
There community still works according to the old tribes rules. They don't encourage any changes in their rituals and culture
They have marriages like one goes and one comes.
I.e Alka will be married to a guy and that guy's sister will be married to Alka's brother.
One girl goes and one girl comes.
Alka's brother Ramesh was much elder than her so he was married before alka.
When his sister in law came to their place . she started acting as she don't won't to stay at her in law's place and she want's to take her husband along with her to her parents home.
Ramesh was controlled by her and he never spoke in any of the family matters.
He went away with her wife to his in law's home.
Alka's parents Manuram and Kasturi devi were poor ,used to work in farms of different people. They didn't own any land. They were tenets in one of the Thakur's farm.
In this way they tried to fulfill the needs of the family.
Alka and her second brother Mahesh stood in support of their parents. They worked here and there and helped to support parents.
Alka was very brave and could sleep taking care of her siblings when parents were out of the place (to some other place )for work.
She shielded her younger siblings like a mother.
The Thakurain(wife of Thakur Saab)liked alka's behavior and used to call her for work at her haveli and used to reward her with either money or any other things.
She was in awe with Alka's bravery and her determination, never ever give up behavior.
She hated when other girls used to talking to boys who were aimless, flirting with girls..was their motto.
Her village environment was like goal of girl is getting married.she is born for that purpose only.
But alka was against such thoughts, she was like a boy to her father.supporting and standing behind him in every decision of him.
She always supported and encouraged her brother Mahesh to study as she never got a chance to study after 8th class. As there was no school in her village after 8 and her family couldn't afford to send her to the nearby city.If ever her parents could hav arranged money for her education and sent her to the city.
They would have been killed by taunts of villagers and their own community.
Alka was  against her marriage to Ramesh brother-in -law as Ramesh mother-in-law wanted her own daughter to be with her along with her son-in-law and she wanted alka to come to her home and work like a maid serving them.
Alka was against as she was like she will be taking care of her own parents instead of getting married to a guy who is his mom's puppet and who wanted a free maid to serve instead of a life partner.
When her in-laws came to ask for marriage she went against her parents and stood infront of all the people of her community who was ready to expel her family out of it.
But,she was supported by Thakur and his  family.
Alka wanted to break this alliance,in her community if one alliance is broken automatically her brother's alliance will be broken.
But Ramesh was the puppet of his wife and he don't wanted to leave his wife.if he leaves her then she can get married to someone else.It happened in bhil community.
Alka was emotionally black mailed by her father to get married to the same guy, whose mother have openly said that she will put her into fire as soon as she comes to her family.
Her parents were under the pressure of community.
They can't break it easily and can't send their daughter in a family where there is fear,of loosing her life.
On the final day of their verdict, she spoke against everyone and challenged the community rules ,she was supported by other women of her tribe as they were put under pressure to go to a family where they are not treated well.
She questioned why blame of
Getting a bad name to their village community.especially for bhils of her village.
Why can't they see the earlier cases when any girl was sent to that particular village, she was killed.
Then why can't she and her family go against the order of their community head.
Why community head is allowed to take decisions of the kids of their community?
Why thier parents are not allowed given this right??
Why ?
If a girl goes raises her voice, why her parents are put under pressure, who inturn suppress voices of their daughters??
Why this injustice..??

If there is one Alka in the community then she is enough to raise her voice and bring renaissance in that particular community, eliminating social evils which still exists.

  3. For a simple Bhil girl , Alka exudes courage and stands for her rights. Not bowing down to tradition and being sacrificed in the name of tradition. Raising our voices is important if we want to change the scenario .Great work !

  4. Yes agree in our society many parents suppress their girl's voice and did not allow them to take their own decisions. hope things change for better in future.

  5. Raising voice against injustice is something that we should teach our kids. I was not aware about the customs of Bhils so this was new information for me.

  7. I agree one person is enough to initiate the change. This society needs more and more of Alka.. Who not only stand for her own rights but can bring the change by eliminating such social evils. Well written and great thought.
